This Cheviot Hills , Los Angeles area, Mid century house has an Amazing walnut floor. This Floor provides a slightly exotic, modern sophistication to this older home. It is a perfect bridge between old and new.
This hardwood floor was able to be installed easily by nailing and gluing over the old oak strip floor that had existed for decades. The process included, removing, and hauling away old carpet, which exposed the old strip floors, which had just been sanded too many times. The decision to upgrade to the Walnut Flooring was made. The first step was to sand away the old varnish on the existing floor to provide a great bond for the glue we would use for the new Walnut. Then the floor was installed with staples, and a full spread coat of Bostik’s BST Polyurethane mastic. Then we allowed the floor to acclimate for three weeks. The acclimation is the best method to make sure that the floor has done any moving or warping, before we come in and true the surface using the big drum sanding machine. After the acclimation, we rough sanded the floor, and then we cut the long grooves, using special grooving equipment, we always do that after the floor has been cut flat by the sander to insure that the grooves are straight, true, and even. The finish sanding work, and details were completed , and we proceeded to apply four coats of satin sheen polyurethane.
